My Penultimate Life Drawing Class at Aardman

I’ve really enjoyed our Life Drawing classes at Aardman. Our tutor, Sara Easby is by far, one of the best teachers I’ve had. She really challenges us, and reminds us constantly to question our work – for instance, where is the weight? What is the feeling of the piece? What quality of line are we using, and why? She insists that we work from the inside out, to really indentify what shape the body is making, then fill in further with shape and texture once we’ve nailed the pose…which is exactly like Animation – getting correct poses, is essential.

We only have one class left…this makes me very sad indeed 😦

Thanks for looking

More Life Drawing at Aardman

We’re nearly half way through our Character Animation course at Aardman studios, in Bristol. Every week we have life drawing classes, and here’s a collection of my life drawings from week 3 and 4.

The animation exercises we were studying in those weeks, included someone swinging a baseball bat and a weight lifter – hopefully in these drawings you’ll recognise some of the poses that would be used for such an animation.

As we progressed throughout the exercises, we were asked to show the weight in our drawings, which is harder than it sounds. I experimented by making the lines darker in the areas where I think the weight is resting. For the poses where the model is lifting weights, these become black blobs…well, they were heavy, so my mark making became heavy too.

In the bottom right hand corner, you’ll spot a print from Glen Keane’s latest short “Duet”. In our first week at Aardman, I was lucky enough to meet him, and he signed my print…I had a space at the end of my display box, so I’ve included it for you to see. I love it!
